چکیده

One of the prime goals of statistical estimation theory is the development of performance bounds when estimating parameters of interest in a given model, as well as constructing estimators that achieve these limits. When the parameters to be estimated are deterministic, a popular approach is to bound the mean-squared error (MSE) achievable within the class of unbiased estimators. Although it is well-known that lower MSE can be obtained by allowing for a bias, in applications it is typically unclear how to choose an appropriate bias. In this survey we introduce MSE bounds that are lower than the unbiased Cramér–Rao bound (CRB) for all values of the unknowns. We then present a general framework for constructing biased estimators with smaller MSE than the standard maximum-likelihood (ML) approach, regardless of the true unknown values. Specializing the results to the linear Gaussian model, we derive a class of estimators that dominate least-squares in terms of MSE. We also introduce methods for choosing regularization parameters in penalized ML estimators that outperform standard techniques such as cross validation.

Gaussian Mixture (GM) Passive Localization using Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA)

This paper describes the passive emitter localization using Time Difference of Arrival (TDOA) measurements. It investigates various methods for estimating the solution of this nonlinear problem: the Maximum Likelihood Estimation (ML) as a batch algorithm, the Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) as an analytical approximation, the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF) as a deterministic sampling approach and f...

Covariance , Subspace , and Intrinsic Cramér - Rao Bounds Steven

Cramér-Rao bounds on estimation accuracy are established for estimation problems on arbitrary manifolds in which no set of intrinsic coordinates exists. The frequently encountered examples of estimating either an unknown subspace or a covariance matrix are examined in detail. The set of subspaces, called the Grassmann manifold, and the set of covariance (positive-definite Hermitian) matrices ha...

Uniformly Improving the Cramér-Rao Bound and Maximum-Likelihood Estimation

An important aspect of estimation theory is characterizing the best achievable performance in a given estimation problem, as well as determining estimators that achieve the optimal performance. The traditional Cramér-Rao type bounds provide benchmarks on the variance of any estimator of a deterministic parameter vector under suitable regularity conditions, while requiring a-priori specification...

A risk-unbiased approach to a new Cramér-Rao bound

How accurately can one estimate a deterministic parameter subject to other unknown deterministic model parameters? The most popular answer to this question is given by the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB). The main assumption behind the derivation of the CRB is local unbiased estimation of all model parameters. The foundations of this work rely on doubting this assumption. Each parameter in its turn is t...

Minimax-optimal Inference from Partial Rankings

This paper studies the problem of rank aggregation under the Plackett-Luce model. The goal is to infer a global ranking and related scores of the items, based on partial rankings provided by multiple users over multiple subsets of items. A question of particular interest is how to optimally assign items to users for ranking and how many item assignments are needed to achieve a target estimation...
